December Book Recommendations

During this hectic holiday season, we would like to recommend three books to help you pause, reflect, and focus on the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Why Christ Came
by Joel R. Beeke and William Beokestein

Have you ever had trouble answering the question, “Why did God become man?” Some of us might be able make a list of reasons why, but could we actually articulate and expound on them? In this book, Beeke and Boekestein offer 31 short and clear meditations that can help the answer the question “Why did Jesus come to Earth?”

Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus: Experiencing the Peace and Promise of Christmas
Edited by Nancy Guthrie

For those who might be interested in reading from authors throughout the history of the church, this book includes excerpts from those like Saint Augustine all the way to present day authors like John MacArthur, Ray Ortlund, and our own senior pastor, Alistair Begg. This book offers an answer to the cry of one pastor when he urged his congregation to pray, “O, do be earnest with God, that you might have an interest in the Redeemer…” as he spoke on the Advent of Jesus.

A Faith to Live By: Understanding Christian Doctrine
by Donald Macleod

Why recommend a Systematic Theology book for Advent? This book in particular is a comprehensive guide to foundational Christian doctrine from the pen of a theologian with a pastor’s heart. Each chapter provides a helpful and practical guide to foundational Christian beliefs that makes them accessible to anyone. A good example of this can be found in the chapter on the incarnation, the doctrine of how Christ is truly God and truly man. Macleod provides a thorough, yet worshipful, exposition on Jesus showing us the importance, beauty, and glory of the incarnation.

You can pick up or order any of these books at Books by the Park, or through your favorite bookseller.
